Left-Leaning Influencers Shift to Bluesky: Major Pew Research Findings Signal Changing Social Media Dynamics

Recent shifts in social media highlight a notable migration of left-leaning influencers to Bluesky, and a new analysis sheds light on just how significant this move has become. According to the latest Pew Research Center report, many prominent voices are exploring this emerging platform, marking a potential shift in the digital landscape.

This update builds on Pew’s November 2024 news influencer report, which initially didn’t include Bluesky in its data. The original study focused on a select group of 500 influential users—those with over 100,000 followers on major platforms who actively comment on current events.

Fast forward to early 2025, and Pew’s recent look at these same influencers reveals that nearly half—about 43%—had created accounts on Bluesky by February or March. Interestingly, over half (51%) of these new Bluesky accounts were established after the 2024 U.S. presidential election, signaling a recent surge in interest.

The data also uncovers a clear partisan divide. Among those who openly identify as liberals or Democrats and supported figures like Kamala Harris or Joe Biden before the election, a striking 69% have joined Bluesky. In contrast, only 15% of conservative influencers made the switch, highlighting a more cautious or slower adoption among right-leaning voices.

Despite this migration, most influencers haven’t abandoned their primary platform—X (formerly Twitter). While Elon Musk’s association with Donald Trump seemed to attract some new users to Bluesky, Pew found that 82% of these influencers still maintain active accounts on X, only slightly down from 85% earlier in 2025.

Most importantly, even as left-leaning influencers experiment with Bluesky, the majority continue to be active on X. About 87% haven’t left the platform, and they tend to post more frequently there than on Bluesky.

That said, Bluesky’s activity is steadily increasing. The proportion of influencers posting on Bluesky grew from 54% in early January to 66% by late March, indicating a rising interest and engagement on the platform. This trend suggests Bluesky is becoming an increasingly relevant space for influential voices in the social media landscape.
