After nearly seven years of anticipation, fans of Toby Fox’s beloved RPG Undertale can finally rejoice—more Deltarune is here! The latest releases, chapters three and four, are so impressive that I wholeheartedly recommend diving into everything currently available, even with three more chapters on the horizon.
In Deltarune, you step into the shoes of Kris, a teenage kid living in a charming town filled with friendly monsters and animals. The adventure kicks off when Kris teams up with Susie, a bit of a bully, for a school project. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they stumble into the mysterious Dark World—hidden just behind a closet at school. There, they join forces with the prince of this shadowy realm, adopt heroic personas, and set out to find and destroy the Dark Fountains threatening their world—all while forging unlikely friendships along the way.
Each of the four current chapters of Deltarune explores a different part of the Dark World, often centered around a villainous figure. This episodic format feels natural, with each chapter offering a self-contained adventure that lasts a few hours, sprinkled with clues and moments that connect to a larger, more intriguing story. It’s a monster-of-the-week approach that keeps the gameplay fresh and engaging.
One of the game’s standout features, reminiscent of Undertale, is its battle system. Players can choose to fight enemies or use “acts” to spare them, often with humorous and creative options—like mini-games to catch a cyber-themed mouse enemy or engaging in silly dialogue. The game encourages peaceful solutions, making each encounter a playful and strategic experience. During battles, you’ll dodge enemy projectiles by moving a small heart on the screen, with attack patterns that are as quirky as they are challenging—like enemies attacking with mice or a wandering computer mouse pointer.
The whimsical humor and clever gags are everywhere in Deltarune. From humorous character interactions to goofy enemies, every moment feels worthwhile. My nearly 15-hour journey through the current chapters was packed with pun-filled dialogue, jokes, and amusing gimmicks. Fans of Undertale will recognize familiar characters like Sans the skeleton, Toriel the goat-like figure, and Alphys the lizard-like teacher. But you don’t need to have played Undertale to enjoy the story—chapter four, in particular, had me unexpectedly hooked as story threads started to weave together in surprising ways. I haven’t even explored the secret bosses or alternate routes yet!
While the future of Deltarune remains uncertain—chapter five is slated for 2026, with subsequent chapters possibly arriving annually until the final one in 2028—these first four chapters already stand strong on their own. It’s exciting to think about where the story might go, but even now, the game offers a compelling, fun-filled experience.
Deltarune’s first four chapters are available for purchase on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and PC. The best part? Future chapters will be released for free, making this a game you can enjoy for years to come. Dive in now and experience the magic of Deltarune—it’s a journey you won’t want to miss!
