How AI Chatbots Can Support Gaming Industry Workers Amid Microsoft Layoffs: Insights and Controversies

Share

Microsoft’s recent wave of layoffs has hit its gaming divisions hard, leaving many feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. In the midst of this challenging time, one Xbox executive has suggested a surprising coping strategy: turning to AI chatbots for advice.

Matt Turnbull, an Xbox Game Studios leader, shared a now-deleted LinkedIn post offering support to those affected by the layoffs, which have resulted in the loss of up to 9,100 jobs across Microsoft. In his message, he emphasized that navigating job loss can be emotionally taxing but encouraged colleagues to consider using AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to ease the burden.

While some may have reservations about AI—especially in creative industries like gaming—Turnbull argued that these tools can be valuable for practical support. He suggested they could assist with resume building, career planning, and job applications, helping individuals feel less stuck and more confident during uncertain times.

“These are really challenging times, and if you’re navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you’re not alone and you don’t have to go it alone,” Turnbull wrote. “No AI tool replaces your voice or your experience. But when mental energy is limited, these tools can help you get unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.”

Microsoft’s strong investment in AI—announcing an $80 billion boost in AI infrastructure earlier this year—may have influenced Turnbull’s perspective. However, the suggestion has sparked some controversy. Many in the gaming community and creative sectors are wary of AI’s growing role, fearing it could threaten jobs and diminish the human element so vital to game development.

Shortly after posting, Turnbull deleted his LinkedIn message, possibly in response to criticism. Comments on other platforms indicated that some creatives felt his advice overlooked the emotional and personal challenges of layoffs in the gaming industry.

Here’s a glimpse of what Turnbull’s original post said:

“These are really challenging times, and if you’re navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you’re not alone and you don’t have to go it alone.

I know these tools can evoke strong feelings, but I believe they can also provide practical help. I’ve been experimenting with AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to reduce the emotional and cognitive load during job transitions.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here are some prompts and ideas that might help:

**Career Planning:**
– ‘Act as a career coach. I’ve been laid off from a [role] in the game industry. Help me build a 30-day plan to regroup, research new roles, and start applying without burnout.’
– ‘What game industry roles could I pivot to with experience in [Production/Narrative/LiveOps/etc.]?’

**Resume & LinkedIn Assistance:**
– ‘Here’s my current resume. Can you give me three tailored versions for AAA, platform/publishing roles, and small studio leadership?’
– ‘Rewrite this resume bullet to highlight impact and metrics.’
– ‘Draft a new LinkedIn “About Me” section focusing on my leadership style, shipped titles, and vision for game development.’

**Networking & Outreach:**
– ‘Help me craft a friendly message to reconnect with old coworkers about exploring new opportunities.’
– ‘Write a warm outreach message for a job posting at [studio name].’

**Emotional Support & Confidence:**
– ‘I’m struggling with imposter syndrome after being laid off. Can you help me reframe this experience positively?’

While no AI tool can replace your personal voice and experience, they can help you move forward more calmly and clearly during tough times. Feel free to share this advice with others in your network.

Stay kind, stay smart, stay connected.”
