Google has made it easier for Workspace users to access and utilize “Gems” — customizable versions of its Gemini AI assistant — right from the side panel in popular Workspace apps like Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail. No need to open a separate Gemini app; now you can access both pre-made and personalized Gems directly within your workspace environment.
Google explains that Gems are designed to help you harness the power of Gemini more efficiently by reducing repetitive prompts and offering tailored assistance. Whether you want a chatbot specialized in a specific task or a general assistant, Gems can be customized to fit your needs.
Create your own Gems to become an expert in areas like brand-specific copywriting, exam revisions, or industry-focused content. You can even upload your own files to give Gems more context for complex tasks. Google also offers a variety of pre-made Gems for functions such as editing text, coding, brainstorming sales pitches, and more.
Here are some practical ways Workspace users can benefit from Gems:
– Use a copywriting Gem to craft engaging posts and content tailored to your target audience, with settings pre-loaded for your needs.
– Develop a sales-oriented Gem that provides insights based on specific companies, prospects, or industries.
– Create a role-specific assistant Gem to generate relevant summaries and internal communication content.
– Use a persona-based Gem to test and refine your messaging—whether from a CEO or C-suite perspective—to craft compelling, impactful messages.
While custom Gems weren’t previously available within Workspace apps, users can now create their own by visiting gemini.google.com/gems/create or selecting “Create a new Gem” from the side panel. Both custom and pre-made Gems support workspace features like @-mentioning and file access, making integration seamless.
This new Gems feature is accessible to all Google Workspace users who can access Gemini within the side panels of Workspace apps. The rollout began on July 2nd and may take up to 15 days to fully reach all users.
