Taylor Swift has achieved a major milestone: she now owns all of the music she’s ever created. In a heartfelt message shared on her website, Swift revealed that she has purchased the masters of her first six albums, reclaiming her artistic rights from Shamrock Capital. This company had owned her music since entertainment executive Scooter Braun sold them after acquiring Big Machine Label Group in 2019—a move Swift has publicly described as her “worst case scenario.”
“All I’ve ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to be able to one day purchase my music outright with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy,” Swift shared. She expressed her gratitude to Shamrock Capital for being the first to offer her a chance at ownership, describing it as a pivotal moment in her journey.
Swift’s ability to buy back her masters was made possible by the overwhelming support from fans for her re-recorded albums, known as Taylor’s Versions, as well as her electrifying The Eras Tour concerts. Now, she owns not only her music but also her music videos, concert films, album artwork, photography, and unreleased songs—an entire universe of her artistic expression.
This achievement marks a significant turning point for Swift, who has long advocated for artists’ rights and control over their work. She recalled how, when Braun acquired her rights through Big Machine, she was left feeling powerless. Despite asking and pleading for a chance to own her music outright, she was told she could only earn back one album at a time with each new release.
In 2020, Braun sold the masters to Shamrock Capital for approximately $360 million—close to the amount Swift paid to regain her music—highlighting both the value of her work and her determination to reclaim it. Today, Taylor Swift stands proudly as the sole owner of her musical legacy, a testament to her resilience and unwavering dedication to artistic independence.
