X Temporarily Pauses Encrypted DMs for Important Updates – What It Means for Users

Share

Social network X has announced that it is temporarily pausing its encrypted direct messages (DMs) feature as it works on important improvements.

In an update posted on X, the platform’s engineering team explained that users will still be able to access their existing encrypted messages, but sending new encrypted messages will be on hold for now. The company hasn’t provided a timeline for when this feature will be reactivated.

Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, there have been bold promises to revamp direct messaging and rival privacy-focused services like Signal. Launched in 2023 for verified users, the encrypted DMs aimed to enhance privacy—but they come with some limitations. Currently, the feature doesn’t support group chats, only encrypts text and links (not media), and lacks protections against man-in-the-middle attacks. Additionally, encrypted conversations don’t seamlessly transfer to new devices, which has been a point of concern for many users.

Stay tuned for updates as X continues to refine its encrypted messaging experience.
