Kaiser Permanente Faces System Outage Disrupting Healthcare Services
Kaiser Permanente is currently battling a significant system outage that’s impacting its hospitals and pharmacies across multiple regions. The outage has temporarily halted digital services, forcing staff to revert to pen and paper for prescriptions and other administrative tasks. This disruption is also slowing down various other services within the healthcare giant.
According to a spokesperson, Kathleen Campini Chambers, “Kaiser Permanente is experiencing network interruptions at one of our data centers, which is affecting some of our applications. All clinical facilities remain operational, but members may experience delays in lab work, radiology, and pharmacy services both online and in our facilities. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and want our members to know that our technical teams are working tirelessly to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. For updates, members can visit kp.org.”
Regional websites for Northern California and Oregon/SW Washington have also posted alerts, warning members that certain features—such as e-visits, billing, message center, and record access—may be temporarily unavailable.
The impact was evident firsthand when a Verge staff member attempted to fill a prescription at a Kaiser hospital pharmacy. With all systems down—including payment terminals—the staff had to fill out manual point-of-sale forms. Pharmacists warned that wait times could be lengthy, with some prescriptions taking up to an hour to process.
Social media reports, including a Reddit thread, reveal similar issues across Southern California and Maryland. Kaiser Permanente has acknowledged the outages on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), assuring members that they are aware of the problem and are actively working to restore full services.
Stay tuned for further updates as Kaiser Permanente continues to resolve this unexpected technical challenge.
